Assignment 3 summary
For assignment 3 I decided to write about the death penalty. I got 12 comments, which was pretty average in comparison to the rest of the class. When choosing a topic I tryed to pick something that was a blatantly controversial topic, something I know is a very divided issue. For this reason I think I made a good choice, but I think I could’ve made it more controversial. and thus gotten more comments.
The problem with using the broad category of capital punishment is that it really doesn’t hit very many people on a personal level. People have their opinions, but I think I could have obtained more comments by making it more personal. I should have used specific examples- Scott Peterson, OJ Simpson, etc. These are real cases that people can put a face to, that they saw in their homes night after night watching the news and forming opinions about.
After hearing about what other people in the class wrote about, I think I could have picked something a little more up to date. There aren’t any hot stories about capital punishment in the news lately. I probably wouldv’e gained more comments if I chose something that is highly controversial in the news at this time, so it’s fresh in peoples minds and probably more likely to make their blood boil from a debate.
I really liked this project because when I saw people comment against my viewpoint, it actually made me upset and it seemed I couldn’t type my rebuttle fast enough. This is my first experience with commenting in which I got a lot of feedback, really got into the thread, and tryed multiple times to prove my point. When I checked my email I was excited to see that someone had commented on it, and eager to read what they wrote. This project deffinetly gave me a better outlook on commenting then I had before.
All in all, I think I did alright on the project. I didn’t know what to expect, picked a little too broad of a topic, and now I know what I’d do differently if I ever do something like this again. The best part of it is that I would now consider going and commenting on stories/videos/etc that interest me on my own, which I wouldn’t have done before.
